It’s a common refrain at the end of a year…that it went by so fast. It seems like just yesterday we were thinking about New Year’s resolutions, a fresh start, a word for the year, or something else to kick off 2014. And now it’s coming to a close.
Parenting presented some glorious moments for me in 2014—like when my son came home for a month-long leave after finishing up his first duty station in Turkey. That was followed by the pain of saying goodbye when he left for a two year assignment to Japan.
There was the devastating moment when I learned my teen daughter was pregnant. That was followed by the joy in acceptance and learning I was going to have a granddaughter.
In between were the usual events of life. Watching a favorite show together, having grandma over for a dinner and movie, laughing, and hugs.
Mixed in were some challenges experienced in our immediate and extended families. Divorce, arguments, disappointments and the need to forgive.
Some of the best times came through answered prayer, breakthroughs and the dispensing of grace.
Good, bad or indifferent—they were all moments to be treasured. Isn’t that what we experience every year that passes? We never know the specifics of how it will all play out. We only know that at some point we will experience them…
Some moments we experienced more than others. Regardless, all of them weaved the tapestry of our lives for 2014. Not one moment was a waste. Every moment was filtered through the hands of God. And each one has the potential to make us a better person. We may not have the ability to choose our moments. But we do have the ability to respond with a positive attitude and with faith that God is still in control.
I want to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas. May you learn to treasure EVERY moment, not only the remaining days of 2014…but in the year that is ahead!
